Pronunciation of -ed in English

Hey guys, now that we have explained this in class, take a look at this video to remember the information even better! I hope it helps.

A few weeks ago Woodward English published this video in which they look at the 3 different ways of pronouncing the ending -ED at the end of regular verbs in English.

They go into detail about the rules necessary to know the correction pronunciation of any -ED ending: These rules are  for regular verbs in the past tense, for regular past participles and for adjectives that end in ED.

There is a special section about voiced and voiceless (or unvoiced) sounds in English.

You will also find the Woodward -ED Pronunciation chart where you will hear how each each word is said.

You can find more details about the correct pronunciation of ED at the end of words in English here.

ACCENT ATTACK!

Just take a look at this website. It’s basically a giant database of different accents. You can search by language (in your case English), by region, by clicking on the map, even by gender (maybe you prefer listening to women, or men). It is a project of the linguistics program in the department of English, the college of arts and science’s technology across the curriculum program, and the center for history and new media at George Mason University, in Virginia, USA.

The speech accent archive uniformly presents a large set of speech samples from a variety of language backgrounds. Native and non-native speakers of English read the same paragraph and are carefully transcribed. Pay attention to the phonetic transcriptions since they will help you to internalize the symbols.

Everyone who speaks a language, speaks it with an accent. A particular accent essentially reflects a person’s linguistic background. When people listen to someone speak with a different accent from their own, they notice the difference, and they may even make certain biased social judgments about the speaker.

ENGLISH VOWELS AND DIPHTHONGS

This is a beautiful video DDeubel has published in EFL Classroom. It gives us a great opportunity to revise the English vowels and diphthongs.

Suggested activity:
1) Watch the video and enjoy it. It has got a great visual power.
2) Try to identify the biggest number of words the voiceover says.
3) Watch the video again and read the words below, paying attention to their pronunciation and the vowel sounds.

AMERICAN ACCENT TRAINING

So… you know how we are always talking about phonetics in class… Well, I found this series of videos(12 of them) about the vocalic sounds in American English. If you have time, watch them all and practice these sounds. They show you how to position your lips and your tongue and they are quite illustrative. They also give you the different spellings for each sound. I am sure you’ll find this rather useful.
